Australia: Modern Masters — Brokenwood & Neldner Road
Benchmarks of the Hunter Valley and Barossa
Australian fine wine is entering a bold new era of artisanal focus, offering a masterclass in terroir without the collector's premium. The two estates here make the case beautifully: the freshly crowned Winery of the Year, Brokenwood, and the terroir-driven Neldner Road, helmed by Dave Powell—a man Robert Parker once hailed as "unquestionably one of the world's finest wine producers." This is established mastery the wider market has yet to fully price, and for my money, it is where the smart drinking lies.
Brokenwood: The Hunter Valley Icon & Winery of the Year 2026
For more than half a century, Brokenwood has been a cornerstone of Australia's fine wine story—and its latest honour cements that standing: Winery of the Year 2026 from the prestigious Halliday Wine Companion. Founded in 1970 and now steered by Stuart Hordern, himself named Winemaker of the Year at the 2024 Hunter Valley Legends Awards, the estate swept the 2026 awards with an astonishing seventeen Gold Medals—headlined by the near-perfect 2023 Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz (99 points) and the 2019 ILR Reserve Semillon (98 points).
Neldner Road: The Under-the-Radar Terroir of the Barossa
Dave Powell is arguably the most colourful—and refreshingly unfiltered—winemaker in the global wine industry. Famously straight-talking and an absolute genius in the cellar, his career has unfolded in three chapters:
Torbreck: Founded in 1992 after Dave returned to the Barossa from abroad. His cult sensation "RunRig" helped carry Australian wine onto the world stage.
Powell & Son: Launched in 2014 with his son Callum, continuing his signature style with ancient vines from historic Barossa plots.
Neldner Road: After Callum went independent in 2019, a new chapter was established to continue Dave's life's work. Neldner Road remains intensely artisanal—minimal intervention, micro-yields from rescued ancient vines, traditional basket pressing—delivering concentrated, beautifully lively Barossa wine at a fraction of its global peers' cost.

Brokenwood, ILR Reserve Semillon 2018
[Icon Semillon of the Hunter]
Sourced from the historic Oakey Creek Vineyard, planted in 1982, this wine is born from free-draining alluvial soils over clay with a gentle easterly aspect. Handled with minimalist precision in the cellar—entirely free from oak—it undergoes six years of patient bottle ageing at the estate before release. The result is a Semillon of dazzling, ethereal clarity, one that effortlessly bridges youthful, razor-sharp citrus purity and the complex, savoury depth of maturity.
Brokenwood, Indigo Vineyard Chardonnay 2023
[Premium Chardonnay in Alpine Sunshine]
This is Australian Chardonnay at its most electric: a wine that crackles with cool-climate tension yet melts across the palate with the richness of liquid gold. Grown in the foothills of the Victorian Alps at Beechworth, the fruit is coaxed from a mosaic of aspects, clones and old vines planted in 1999—then whole-bunch pressed and wild-fermented in French oak. The result hums with energy and depth in equal measure: think struck-flint and citrus oil on the nose, a core of sun-warmed stone fruit, and a finish that lingers long after the glass is empty. This is New World Chardonnay at the very top of its game.

Brokenwood, Indigo Vineyard Shiraz 2022
[Silken High-Altitude Shiraz]
The Indigo Vineyard Shiraz is a masterclass in the modern, elegant expression of Victorian cool-climate viticulture. Moving entirely away from old-school heavy extraction, this boutique bottling from Beechworth is a study in silkiness, refinement and aromatic complexity. Incorporating a 30% whole-bunch inclusion to build structure and savoury tension, the wine is crafted with a hands-off approach designed to preserve its vibrant, high-altitude identity. The result is Shiraz of rare poise—silken, perfumed and impossible to rush.

Neldner Road, Barossa & Eden Valleys Shiraz 2022
[A Masterful Symphony of Dual-Valley Terroir]
The Barossa & Eden Valleys Shiraz is a masterclass in regional synergy, seamlessly marrying the muscular power of the Barossa floor with the ethereal elegance of the Eden Valley's high-altitude vineyards. Sourced from exceptional sixty-year-old "Survivor Vines," this wine is a perfect components blend: a single large foudre of Eden Valley fruit raised alongside one foudre of Barossa fruit. The 2022 vintage walks the fine line between freshness and density with rare grace, delivering a deeply exciting, complex Shiraz that frames the region's classic, sun-drenched richness within a vibrant, cool-climate spine.
Neldner Road, Barossa Valley Shiraz 2022
[The Gateway to Barossa Greatness]
The Barossa Valley Shiraz is the keystone of the estate and the ultimate introduction to the greatness of Neldner Road. Crafted from handpicked fruit, this wine is fermented in traditional open-top concrete vats and gently basket-pressed—an uncompromising, artisanal approach designed to preserve the absolute purity of fruit. To let the region's unique terroir speak without the heavy mask of small new oak, the wine is matured in large-format, 4,500-litre French oak foudres before being bottled without fining or filtration. The result is a beautifully structured Shiraz that balances deep, brooding density with incredible value.
Neldner Road, Eden Valley Steinert Riesling 2023
[1930 Ancestor-Vine Riesling]
The Eden Valley is globally renowned for producing some of the finest, most laser-focused Rieslings in the Southern Hemisphere, and the Steinert vineyard stands at the very summit of this prestige. Crafted from ancient vines planted in 1930, this exceptional wine draws on deep-rooted, almost century-old heritage as its heart and soul. Handled with protective, minimalist care in the cellar, it beautifully traverses the line between intense power and ethereal grace, delivering tremendous depth while remaining incredibly precise, taut and terroir-driven.
