Champagne

“…the best champagne has a combination of freshness, richness, delicacy, and raciness, and a gently stimulating strength that no sparkling wine from anywhere else has yet achieved.” – The World Atlas of Wine

Champagne is a wine region located 145km north-east of Paris. It is the northernmost limit where the vine can ripen successfully. The marginal climate contributes to the marked acidity of the wine and the tradition of using blended grape varieties in the region.

Each of the three grape varieties gives different characteristics to the wine: Chardonnay gives elegance and delicacy, while Pinot Noir contributes to its backbone and structure. Pinot Meunier provides fruitiness and roundness for early drinking. Nevertheless, Blanc de Blancs (100% Chardonnay) and Blanc de Noir (100% Pinot Noir) are also produced in the region

Champagne covers 33,000 hectares across the main vineyard areas of Côte des Blancs, Vallée de la Marne and Montagne de Reims. The chalky soil provides good drainage for the vine. Apart from the terrior, one of the distinctive features for champagne is its method of production: ‘Methode Champenois’ or ‘Traditional Method’.
