Syrah and Shiraz are genetically the same grape - but the wines they produce can be very different in style, and it’s always interesting to explore how they vary. We have put together a selection of wines from the two camps: the perfumed, delicate “Syrah” from Northern Rhône, and “Shiraz” from the New World, with its rich, lush and riper style. 

The Northern Rhône is known for its pebble-covered terraces with granite-clay soils. Commonly blended with Viognier for extra aromas and complexity, the Syrah tends to be more minerally, with attractive hints of smoky herbs.

In the New World, Australia is famed for its very old vines from the Barossa Valley, which helps to add layers of complexity to the Shiraz. Other countries like Italy and the U.S., produce well-flavoured and food-friendly Syrah too!
