Chilean Terrior, French Expertise (Lapostolle & Pedro parra)

Chilean Terroir, French Expertise
Lapostolle & Pedro Parra — Two Visions, One Frontier

Few partnerships capture the modern Chilean wine narrative as compellingly as those forged between French savoir-faire and Chile's singular geological inheritance. Long before the world recognised Chile as a serious fine-wine destination, two distinct movements were quietly redefining what this country could express in the glass.

On one side, Lapostolle — founded in 1994 by Alexandra Marnier-Lapostolle, heir to the Grand Marnier dynasty — brought five generations of French winemaking heritage to the granite-strewn amphitheatre of Apalta in Colchagua. Under the technical hand of consulting oenologist Michel Rolland, the estate pioneered biodynamic viticulture in Chile and unveiled, with the inaugural Clos Apalta, a wine that demonstrated Carmenère's true icon-tier potential.

On the other, Pedro Parra — Chile's internationally celebrated terroir specialist, holder of a doctorate in terroir studies from Paris and consultant to elite estates across four continents — turned his forensic eye inward, to the ancient granite soils of Itata and the forgotten old vines of País and Cinsault. The result is a portfolio of wines of staggering precision and place, hailed by critics as among the most exciting expressions emerging anywhere in South America.

Together, these producers offer an unparalleled window into the two faces of fine Chilean wine: the polished, French-inflected grandeur of Apalta, and the raw, mineral honesty of Itata's granite. A rare opportunity to taste, side by side, the work of two of the country's most consequential names.

Pedro Parra

Pedro Parra, Imaginador Cinsault 2023
Granite-Etched Purity from Itata

Pedro Parra's Imaginador is a study in restraint and place. Sourced from old, dry-farmed bush-vine Cinsault rooted in the decomposed granite soils of Itata, the wine is fermented with a generous proportion of whole clusters and raised in neutral vessels — a deliberately hands-off approach designed to let the granite speak unfiltered. The result is one of South America's most distinctive light-reds: a Cinsault of vivid translucence, electric acidity and stony intensity, drinking with the savoury cool-climate cadence of a fine Cru Beaujolais yet unmistakably Chilean in voice.

Pedro Parra, Bluepit País 2022
The Wine That Redefined Chilean País

A landmark bottling that has fundamentally recalibrated the world's understanding of País — the humble, centuries-old Chilean workhorse grape — as a vehicle for serious, terroir-driven fine wine. Drawn from 150-year-old vines near Ñipas, fermented entirely with whole clusters and raised for two years in foudre to integrate the granitic tannins, Bluepit arrives as a wine of dazzling clarity and weightlessness. It stands today, in the words of the Wine Advocate, as "head and shoulders above any other País" ever tasted — the definitive proof that origin, in the right hands, transcends grape variety.

Lapostolle

Lapostolle, Clos Apalta & Vinothèque
Chile's Carmenère Icon — Three Vintages, Three Expressions

Clos Apalta is, without exaggeration, the wine that established Chile's claim to icon-tier status. Born from the steep, granite-and-clay slopes of the Apalta amphitheatre in Colchagua, it draws upon some of the country's oldest ungrafted, pre-phylloxera Carmenère vines, blended with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Vinified by gravity in the estate's six-level subterranean cellar — an architectural marvel hewn into the hillside — and farmed entirely biodynamically, Clos Apalta has been a critical and collector benchmark since its inaugural 1997 release.

The Vinothèque is the late-released library tier — a small allocation of the finest barrels of an exceptional vintage, held back in the château's cellars for extended bottle ageing before release. Disgorged from the estate's own reserves only when deemed to have reached their optimal drinking plateau, these bottles offer a rare, directly-from-château provenance of mature Clos Apalta — the wine in its full secondary expression, as the estate itself intends it to be experienced.

Lapostolle, Cuvée Alexandre Carmenère 2024
Carmenère in its Most Approachable, Fruit-Forward Voice

The Cuvée Alexandre range — named in honour of founder Alexandra Marnier-Lapostolle — represents the estate's polished, terroir-expressive mid-tier: wines drawn from specific Apalta parcels and crafted with the same biodynamic rigour as the icon Clos Apalta, yet released earlier and at a fraction of the price. The 2024 Carmenère is a youthful, vivacious expression — generous, ripe and immediately drinkable, yet underpinned by the herbal, spice-laden signature that defines the variety at its best.

Lapostolle, La Parcelle 8 Vieilles Vignes 2011
A Single-Parcel Treasure from Pre-Phylloxera Vines

A rare, hyper-focused single-parcel bottling drawn from 100-year-old ungrafted vines — a living relic of pre-phylloxera Chile, capable of expressing the kind of depth and savoury complexity that only century-old roots can deliver. Now with fifteen years of bottle age, the 2011 has reached a glorious plateau of secondary maturity — a wine of polished tannins, layered savoury complexity and remarkable poise, drinking beautifully in its prime window.
