The vineyards of Mozia are utterly unique. Once a Phoenician colony, this island in Marsala’s Stagnone lagoon, is an extraordinary archeological site. Here, under the Sicilia DOC, the destinies of two families—Tasca d’Almerita from Palermo and Whitaker from England—came together in this coastal ecosystem to make wine where vineyards have long played a part. Of the island’s 40 hectares, seven are planted with Grillo. In the oldest part of the vineyard, vines are still cultivated ad alberello (bush-trained), an ancient training method only found in a few other localities. |
